Ann and Adele left Wisconsin and headed for California in a stolen car. Adele had taken Ted's Mobil Credit Card, so they could pay for hotels rooms and food. Adele rear-ended someone at a red light. They stayed at The Luau Hotel, for about a week while their car was getting fixed. Adele had a realtor show her a really expensive house; she acted like she was going to buy it even though they didn't have any money. Adele dropped Ann off on the side of the road. Ann walked to an Arco station to make a phone call. Then Adele came back and picked her up.

Ann: Chapter 2: Bel Air Hotel: Pages 25-36

They arrived in California. They stopped at a restaurant to clean up before going to the hotel. Adele told Ann she could give herself a new name while they were in California. Ann chose Heather. They washed the car and headed to the Bel Air Hotel. After they checked in they went to the hotels restaurant. Adele got mad at Ann for ordering expensive food when they couldn't afford it.

Then Adele drove her and Ann to the orphanage and told Ann that if she doesn't mind, this is where she would end up. Later she tells about going to school for the day with Benny, even though she was a year younger. She loved it. When she got older and she was in school she got in trouble for throwing away some of her lunch. She only did it cause her mom made them way too big. Then she tells the story of Christmas and how two orphans came to spend it with them. Later Hal and his friends take Ann and Benny to a carnival. Afterward they went into the woods, and saw a girl and a guy having sex while two other guys waited there turns. Benny, Ann, and Theresa went trick or treating. Two boys held Ann down and cut off all her hair. Then the boys rode off on their bikes. Ann knocked on someone's door. A man answered and let her come in to use the phone to call her mom. Adele came to pick her up and was horrified about her hair.

Lillian is the daughter of Ida. Ida had 7 sisters, Hattie, Clara, Ruth, Irene, Alma, Ellie, and Jen. They were all married except for Ruth who stayed home to cook and clean for their dad. Lillian found a girl near the railroad tracks. She took her home. They found out she was deaf, so they took her to a nun that taught deaf and blind people. Lillian named the girl Penny. Penny's cat bit her. They thought the cat might have had rabies, but the cat ran away. So they gave her a rabies shot everyday for 14 days. Milton, Lillian's Brother found the cat, and Penny's father. He was an Oneida Indian. His wife and other children died of Polio, the other Indians thought he was cursed and banished him, so Penny and him fled. He was so ugly he never left his house, except at night to brake into the library to read about plastic surgery. He gave himself plastic surgery, but he was still really ugly. Penny and him moved into Clara's house. Ida found the cat and had it tested for rabies. Back then they had to kill the animal to test it. The cat ended up not having them. Then the circus came to town; Lillian's father took her and Milton. They saw Penny and her father leaving on a wagon, and that was the last time they ever saw them. When Lillian was 17 she had sex with Art and got pregnant. Then they got married. Art started a newspaper and they eventually bought the house on Lime Kiln Road. By the time Lillian had Adele, Carol was 11. When Carol was 24 she enlisted in the army. They didn't have the money for Carol to go to college but they did for Adele. They said they had spoiled Adele. Carol got married. Art got colon cancer. Adele got married, and then she had Ann. Ann was born very small; they had to put her in an incubator. When Ann was 4 her father left. On Ann's 7th birthday her great grandmother died. They were upset but they had already planned the party, so they celebrated it anyway.
