It's a weekly event for some, and a daily event for others. With this daily occurance you can take a half hour break to have a good laugh, explain a thought of feeling, or get a better understanding about the problems of our society. It's the fun loving cartoon family known as the Simpsons. It may or may not be your favorite show but in one way or another you can relate something in your life to this cartoon family. This is the best cartoon ever produced, and quite possibly the best show running today. The show has stayed on air for over 12 years and not only that, but it has stayed at one of the highest rated time slots of the week. There has to be something right about this show or else it would have fallen years ago. The show uses a unique blend of personalities for each character to exploit issues in our society.

The Simpsons consist of a family of two adults and three children. Each character has their own identity and personality, which has been based on individuals of our society within the same family rank. Homer is the father of this family. When a product is productive it is guaranteed that some competition will come as a result. The Simpsons have set the path for many other comical shows, just as NYPD Blue set the path for drama series, and the X-Files for science fiction. . One popular show sets the standards for many shows to come. Good shows always set the standards for new ideas of new shows. Shows such as South Park, King of the Hill, and Futureramma are all similar in the fact that all use animation and sarcasm of our social issues. The other similarity is that they are all in consecutive order on the same night of the week, with the Simpsons being at the prime time slot on Sunday night. No matter what new shows the major networks come up with, the Simpsons are still broadcasted at the best time of the week.

The Simpsons are based on a sarcastic look at our society. So what is the main attraction behind the Simpsons? Exploiting issues that Americans are well known for, and being able to make the viewer come back for more time and time again. Ignorance, alcoholism, volunerability, vandalism / mischief, and intelligence are all major aspects of each characters development. The viewer can relate their personal experience with the experiences of the characters. Whether it is consciously or subconsciously the viewer continues to watch the show because they can get a laugh from a serious social issue. There was an episode where homer discovered he had a crayon stuck in his head making him a dumb idiot which is what homer is best known for. Once the crayon was removed homer becomes a genius. This new intelligence disrupts his daily routine by making his friends feel uncomfortable around a "smart guy." With his new intelligence, homer learns to bond with his daughter Lisa. Homer realizes what his new intelligence is doing and decides to shove the crayon back into his head making him the dumb husband again. The whole time we find ourselves laughing at homers actions not realizing we are laughing at society. Because we can relate to the characters we continue watching the show to see what new ideas they will come up with next. The exploitation of social issues is what keeps the Simpsons at the top of the charts season after season.

A good show will keep viewers coming back each time until there is lack of foundation. Many shows are stopped because all aspects of the characters have been tapped out. The simpsons is a show made for mature individuals. Kids laugh at the characters for doing silly and crazy things
