Meterology
Humankind's ability to predict the weather has come a long way over the past century. It doesn't seem like to long ago that the only way we could forecast weather events as to look at nature. Farmers would look at things such as when the birds migrated, and if there were a "ring around the moon" to determine if the winter would arrive early, or if it would rain. Today meteorologists have sophisticated radar, computers, and satellites that help them analyze weather patterns and events. With this high-tech equipment, mankind's ability to predict the weather has greatly improved. Oklahoma has one of the best weather forecasting systems in the world. The University of Oklahoma (OU) has one of the best meteorology schools in the entire nation, if not the world. Here young meteorologist wannabe's can take part in some of the most cutting edge research. OU has the most powerful weather radar in the entire world, and is home to the NEXRAD. (Nexrad) It also played a rather integral part in "demonstrating that Doppler weather radar can be a useful tool in the detection of tornadoes, hail, and other severe weather events." (Weather Center) It's really no surprise that Oklahom
I also believe that Oklahoma is way ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to weather forecasting. Here we can tell when a tornado is headed our way several minutes before it hits. The television stations in the area all have state of the art computers that calculate paths of storms and their intensity. These supper systems can even detect circulation in the clouds. With these tools to aid them, the weathermen on our TV stations can send out a warning that severe weather is headed our way. If a tornado is spotted or circulation is detected, than a tornado warning is issued for the area in the path of the storm. Sirens then go off in the communities that are expected to be hit, warning the residents there to take cover quickly. This system has helped save many lives over the years. Especially since the time it takes for a warning to be issued is decreasing. The time it takes before a warning can be issued is on the decrease. This isn't the only way in which we're warned in Oklahoma. Every year the local weather stations educate the citizens, telling them how to survive during such severe weather as tornadoes and lightning. We're informed as to where and how
