Trifles

The Question of Justice in "Trifles"

In Susan Gaspell's "Trifles" a farm wife and a sheriff's wife, both of whom could be assumed to be conservative, are brought to the scene of a crime, with the sheriff and the county attorney.

The men are in search of evidence for a motive in the murder of Mr. Wright. Mrs. Wright is the suspected murderer. All the men need to go forward to make a better case is a reason for Mrs. Wright's suspected actions. "It's clear except for a reason for doing it". "You know juries when it comes to woman. Of there were some definite thing. A thing that would connect up with this strange way or doing it" says the county attorney.

The two men for the better part of the play patronize the women, who are there to gather belonging for the jailed Mrs. Wright the men refer to the woman's work as "Trifles" while they deal in supposedly more important matters. The sheriff mocks the woman's conversation. "They wonder if she was going to quilt it or knot it"

We can see the women's sympathy to the former Minnie Foster growing. "John Wright made the place unpleasant", seemed to be an understatement by Mrs. Hale. Mrs. Hale while gathering Mrs. Wrights clothes reflects on Mrs. Wrights former, more social, happy life. She talks about the loneliness of isolation how Mrs. Wright probably didn't feel comfortable joining in the ladies activities because if the shabbiness of her clothes. "You don't enjoy thing when you feel shabby" she says. We lean from woman that Mrs. Wright was "like a bird-sweet-pretty-timid-fluttery".

As the play ends, and the men make another remark about the trifling concerns about the quilt we see the woman take a stand.

. The woman's concern about quit making along their "woman's work" leads them to eventually discover the evidence the men are seeking.

The men continue to search the women's camaraderie grows, as does their sensitivity to a fellow woman's plight. Their rummaging
