A detailed Summary of Thrones of Ancient Maya

The article that I studied is entitled Thrones and Throne Structures in the Central Acropolis of Tikal as an Expression of the Royal Court, by Peter D. Harrison. In this article it shows that you may use the varieties of reception thrones as evidence of court function. Some of the functions that were used from the throne were reception of tribute goods, reception of prisoners involving presence of military guards, reception of visiting dignitaries displaying royalty, ritual divination, and possibly even accession rituals. This wide use of thrones in Tikal was compared to other culture's royal courts, including the court of Louis XIV in France and the royal Inka court of Cuzco. The examiners found that markers of these courts all included the use of livery (clothing showing especially high rank), use of thrones, and the association of church and state.

The visual arts play a significant role in the Royal Courts of Ancient Maya. Through thrones alone art is used to place social and economic status among the court. The use of art on exterior walls on a structure of fierce warrior images of the ruler was displayed and publicly placed were presumably accessible to all social levels of the population, in contrast, more revealing and intimate scenes depicted on painted vessels and other objects were most likely not for public observation.

There were lintels that depicted royal seats that are described as portable thrones in which are made from perishable materials (probably wood) and actually had a cushioned seat atop each carved base. Some decorations of these portable thrones included repetitions of the royal mat design, human heads, and a more complex yet less decipherable (harder to make out what it is) design.
