During the English Renaissance period John Milton wrote his poetry. Milton' works were appreciated by many but, hard to understand and follow for the modern literary student. Once the modern reader begins to understand his style of writing they begin to like it.

John Milton was born December 9,1608 in London. From 1632 to 1638 he lived in Hort Buckinghamshire. He read Latin, Greek Classic, ecclesiastic, and political history to prepare for his poetic career. He then toured France and Italy from 1638 to 1639. While there he met leading literary figures. Returning back to England he lived in London and began to write a series of social, religious, and political pamphlets.

In1642 Milton married Mary Powell. A few weeks later she left him. She eventually came back were she gave birth to three of his daughters and a son before she died in 1652. He then married a second time to Katherine Woodcock who died during marriage. She too gave birth to a baby girl but she only lived a few months after birth.

Milton had three daughters who survived him many years. Anne, the oldest, Mary, the middle child, and Debra, the youngest. They supplied his want for eyesight. Daily he had one read to him. His eldest daughter had a difficult speech problem, which excused her from reading to her father.

Milton career may be dived into three periods. First, from 1625 through 1640 was the period of poems written while in Cambridge.
