Both cable modem and DSL performance vary from one minute to the next depending on the pattern of use and traffic congestion on the Internet. Since DSL is a private line that only the user has access to, the speed of DSL will always be fast, but cable doesn't apply the same rules. Cable net can be faster then DSL at peak times of 5 PM to 11 PM when not as many users go online because the more people use cable, the speed will degrade from sharing. Compared to traditional dial-up access, these two technologies open up homes and small businesses to a new realm of possibilities for network connectivity and applications.
