Some believe that life hasn't changed since the terrorist attacks on our country. After that day though, not only our moral but also the mental health of America has been disturbed. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder tears apart the mental health of many Americans. Prior to the attacks, these rates were high, leading to increased depression and substance abuse. Though mental disorders have been considerably high in recent years, after the attacks on New York's skyscrapers, anxiety disorders have risen as the leader of America's mental disorders. Before September 11, anxiety disorders were already the most common mental illness in America. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 3.5% of the population suffers from some form of an anxiety disorder. Women, according to an abstract article by Sarah Glazer, experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) twice as often as men do after an exposure to a shocking event. People who suffer from PTSD feel that they are unable to control their emotions. They often experience heart palpitations, dizziness, and extreme sweating. Though all of America was not physically affected form the attacks on September 11, anxiety disorders such as PTSD will cause many people to have flashbacks and physical ailments for years to come. Anxiety disorders won't only occur in those directly affected in New York or Washington. Across the United States there is mourning and anger still. In cases of PTSD, the hippocampus (the part of the brain that is responsible for memory and emotion) appears altered, according to NIMH. When the human body is in danger it produces natural opiates which numb the pain. In people with PTSD, the body continues to produce these opiates, causing the body to suffer from the known symptoms such as sweating and dizziness. Cases of PTSD have already begun to multiply since the attacks. America still feels in danger due to the bio-terrorist threats from the terrorists in Afghanistan.
