We have all causally thought about having an immense amount of money, but never did we think of the effect it would have on our mind, body, and soul. The Pearl is about how Kino, a poor diver encounters a valuable pearl that brings him desolation. The theme of The Pearl is how money can modify a person. This theme is developed through symbolism, plot, and characterization. Symbolism can support the theme by showing how Kino changes, characterization can support the theme of the story by displaying why the pearl makes Kino greedy, and the plot supports the theme on account of Kino changing into a furious person.
Symbolism is most readily used to show change. For example the following quote symbolizes how Kino becomes greedy when he finds the pearl. "In the surface of the great pearl he could see dreams form"(p.11). Kino began to see himself superior to others now that he had the pearl. The book's use of music is also symbolic;
Characterization helps support the theme of The Pearl by showing how Kino and his community began to change after Kino found the pearl. "He hissed at her like a snake"(p.59). This quote talks about how the pearl changes Kino's attitude toward Juana. Not only does Kino change, but the doctor also changes. Before Kino had any money the doctor would not treat his son. "I am a doctor, not a veterinary"(P.11). After he was informed about Kino's fortune he began telling people that he is treating Kino's son for a scorpion sting. The doctor is completely wrapped up in his wealth. Also, Kino's neighbors and the priest were being extremely nice to him after they found out about the pearl. The attitude of Kino's community extends far beyond attempting to become friends with him; it shows that every person is greedy to a certain extent.
Symbolism, plot, and characterization are all used to advance the theme of the story: that money can change a person
