Clone
Cloning and stem cell research, which have been a big issue ever since Hans Spemann first raised the question of nuclear equivalency in 1938. The controversy behind cloning is that this will give scientists too much power, and many people believe that cloning should not be allowed because it is against God's will for how humans are to reproduce. Stem cells have the ability to divide for indefinite periods in culture and to give rise to specialized cells. Research on embryonic stem cells involves the destruction of some human beings for the benefit of others. I am against cloning because of the dangers that are involved in the process and the aftermath of cloning. If cloning and stem cell research was to be legalized, this will give scientists the power to play God, to create and destroy life. Stem cell research treats human life as a commodity to be manufactured when needed and destroyed when desired to achieve some greater purpose. Cloning can be very dangerous to society if they were used in the wrong hands. Cloning was first envisioned in 1938 when Hans Spemann proposed an experiment in which the nucleus from a cell of a late-stage embryo is removed and transplanted into an egg. There was not much success from experim
The argument against cloning is that this gives the scientists the power to play God. If cloning is to be allowed, the scientists can create life and destroy it as well. Those clones that are created just for body organs for transplants will later be destroyed. The cloning process has yet to be perfected, and many human embryos will be destroyed in the process as well. Irving L. Weissman of Stanford University states, "any attempt to clone a human being would be dangerous for the woman and child and likely to fail"(Seppa 52). He also said that only a small percentage of animal clonings result in healthy animals, which means that there are a lot of defective animals that die before reaching adulthood. Even the successful, cloned sheep Dolly has problems. The creators of Dolly "report that the nearly 6-year old sheep has developed arthritis in her left hip and knees. That's early for a sheep to show such a malady, and the report renews concern that cloning may accelerate aging"(J.T. 47). There are still a lot of problems in cloning that have to be solved in order to actually allow this to be done on human beings. Cloning and stem cell research are very difficult issues to look at, due to the fact that there are new discoveries everyday. Stem cell research can be very helpful to society if it is controlled and used for the right reasons. I believe that scientists should try and focus more on using adult cells instead of stem cells derived from human embryos that result in destroying it. Reproductive or human cloning should be banned because it is going against God's will on how we should reproduce, and it is very dangerous to society. I believe that the only way we can resolve this issue is to enforce strict laws and regulations on how the researches are to be done. The government should keep a close eye on the experiments so that nobody tries to clone a human being. The people that favor cloning say that they are not interested in human cloning, but rather in therapeutic cloning. Some of t
