Clear And Present Danger

The novel starts off at a slow pace and not much happens in the first hundred pages. Clancy can be forgiven because the rest of the book makes up for its few shortcomings. The scene that sets the story for the novel is the horrid scene of the president's family friend tortured and then murdered by a drug lord's thugs. The extreme method of playback by the drug lord that in this case is in South America set the stage for a President initiating a covert operation against the drug lord. He does this through the use of a crack special forces unit that works in the jungle virtually alone to accomplish their mission with only radio communications to high tech aerial support that pinpoints and hits targets with laser-guided smart bomb from far away.

At the end of the prologue to Clear and Present Danger, Clancy writes, "And so began something that had not quite begun and would not soon end, with many people in many places moving off in directions and on missions which they all mistakenly thought they understood. Along with the usual, stunning array of military hardware and the latest techno-gadgets, Clear and Present Danger further develops the relationships and characterises in this complex thriller. Admiral James Greer passes the CIA torch to his pupil and close friend, Jack Ryan. Mr. Clark and Chavez meet for the first time. Other recurring characters like Robert Ritter and "the President" add continuity to Clancy's believable, alternate reality of this thriller.

Ultimately, Clear and Present Danger is about good conscience, law, and politics. With Jack Ryan and CIA agent John Clark, Ryan's boss, as its dual heroes in this philosophically complex thriller. Ryan relentlessly pursues what he knows is right and legal, even if it means confronting the president of the United States of America Ryan will do it and do it he does. Clark is the perfect soldier, but a man who finally holds his men higher than the orders of any careless commander. Jack Ryan and John Clark together must find the answers in this chilling novel.
