Late Night

It was one of those nights that the sky was clear and the stars were visible. I had just defeated the stress of finals and was now ready to be back in action; the late night activity of the San Francisco underground scene was calling my name. It is where a person could go and walk down one street and probably visit at least 30 clubs by doing this. There was a particular flavor I was in search of this night, something that could make me exert my body to its fullest extent. I needed to go and release some stress by dancing at a club, I needed to let loose.

When my friends Mike, Christina and I arrived in San Francisco our first destination was the Cat Club. It was a seedy little place hosted the break beat and jungle music. It wasn't much to look at it, with its dark entrance and several vagrants sleeping in the street near the entrance. A different crowd hung out there. It was a mixture of old dance party burnouts and very young ambitious club-goers. I felt confident though, I was going to go in there and knock the crowd's socks off. I was in my best fits (outfit); I was wearing my black old school Adidas running suit with white stripes, and a black Kangol hat. The Adidas Superstar shoes that I was wearing had my white fat lac

The pain the excruciating pain! My ankle was broken, I was couldn't move too well, all I wanted to do was to dance a little. Christina and Mike jumped up and ran over to me. Mike helped me up while frantic Christina ran outside to hail a cab. We were inside the club a total of 30 minutes and all the anticipation and waiting was for nothing.

As we came closer to the dance floor Christina through her fingers over her nose and yelled, "What the hell is that F&$!*N smell?" She was right, what was that smell? It was something almost awful that came over me. The smell was reminiscent of a back ally in San Francisco that many bums lived in with a lot a lot of cats a large dumpster. It was an overwhelming stench of urine! The smell was so bad as if several people had walked through the club and urinated everywhere possible. What we later found out was that only did the toilet over flow, but the cities sewage in the area backed up and discharge sewage in most of the area restrooms.

Mike walked Christina over to the bouncer. I was really curious to see what was going to happen. Christina herself is devious, but both her and Mike, we were definitely going to get into the club. Mike walked up to the bouncer and said something to him. I couldn't hear because he was very quiet about what he said. He pointed to Christina and then she walked over to the bouncer and she said something, I am not too sure what, all I heard was "do you know..." They looked like 2 salespeople up there making a pitch to why they should be admitted into the club.

As the line moved forward closer to the entrance of the club, I could feel the pulsating vibes of the music like a gust of wind every time the door was opened to allow other patrons into the club. It sounded wild in there, I was outside and I wanted to be in there so bad. Just the sound of the music and feeling of the vibration was making me more anxious then ever. I felt like a little kid waiting for Christmas. I needed to be inside, on the dance floor, just it and me. I was going to dance tonight. Suddenly, the line had stopped. What was going on? This couldn't be happening I needed to be inside; I needed to feel weightless and sweaty from some fast paced break dancing. My legs were jittery with anticipation. I felt like I was going to go mad.

As the door opened I could feel the vibrating of the effervescent music pushing against my body. It was loud, hard, and good. It was just pounding throughout the corridor from the entrance to the dance floor; it was something surreal. As the door shut behind us it was as if we were walking away from the light to the dark. The interior of this place was real seedy looking; the walls had been painted black and the only lighting inside was red or some purple neon bulbs behind the bar, but that didn't matter I was going to dance my ass off.

Three hours later here I am, with a broken ankle and with a faint smell of urine on my clothes from when I landed on the floor after my fall. All of my anticipation and annoyance was pointless. I won't be able to dance or go out for months and even then my ankle won't be the same. So the next time I am out and dancing I know to beware of the any three-eared bunny I see.

Christina stamped one of her spiky black high heel shoes against the pavement and stepped about three feet to the side of the line, Mike asked where she was going and she remarked th
