Appearance

One of our most important senses is sight. It is our strongest form of communication. Fifty five percent of a speaker's message is transmitted by the speaker's appearance and body language. When someone approaches you one of the first impressions you will get on the person is their appearance. This person will look at many aspects of you and come up with a conclusion usually within the first thirty seconds. Many decisions in our lives have already been made for us that will impact the way we are looked upon. The shape of your body, the size of your head, your skin color, gender, amount of hair, all of these are predetermined and are permanent unless you choose to medically alter them. Some things like our origin of birth, our families are not changeable, but people can change the way that they are perceived by taking the most visible part of your communication and making it have a more positive impact. Each company was asked to determine a starting salary for the new applicant. When Dr. Walters had finally gotten back all offers she had discovered that the starting salary had ranged from eight to twenty percent higher for modifying these photos. Dr Walters had shown that people are willing to pay more money for someone who looks more the part. Companies are looking for someone who will project the companies image the best.

Many places do not allow people to have any types of tattoo's showing, visible body piercing, revealing clothing, or facial hair. These are just some things that companies put rules on. In one instance a health care provider employee was asked to cover up his tattoos. The employee was upset and refused calling it a violation if his rights. This instance was brought before a court and the employee lost. The health care service was able to provide the court with proof that the tattoo was disruptive to the workplace. Although many people are upset about a company dress code companies still have the right to require a certain appearance.

Employers have the right to lay down any dress code which does not discriminate against an individual because of nationality, race, sex, religion, or any type of disability. Some websites even offer to create a dress code for you for a small fee. Eventually somebody will be obliged to set minimal standards even the most casual work settings.

The lasting permanent impression that is made within thirty seconds is called the halo effect. When your visual effects are positive, the person that is just met will usually a
