Eating Disorders

If you ask almost any group of adolescent girls what they think of themselves or their physical appearance. One word you probably never hear them say as a response is perfect. An adolescent girl can always find something wrong with their appearance or just themselves in general. That is because most adolescent girls look at themselves in a negative way. A young woman's negative self esteem can have a huge effect in their lives it can discourage them from going out, and take away confidence needed to do everyday activities. In today's society we are bombarded with images of the perfect body on TV, billboards, magazines. Many young adolescent girls thrive to become these images of perfection and when they fail the results are devastating.

The investigators that wrote this journal were interested in finding out how adolescent girls' body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and self-esteem effected there life's concerns and leisure activates. " This study presents a preliminary investigation of the relative importance of a number of life concerns and the satisfaction including slimness and physical attractiveness for adolescent girls"(2). The writer of this journal wanted to place girls body dissatisfaction and self-esteem

in the context of what they think is important and what they do. The questions asked in the experiment were What are adolescent girls' major life concerns? How do life concerns and leisure activities affect body dissatisfaction and disordered eating? How do life concerns and leisure activities affect the global self-esteem of adolescent girls? Widespread body dissatisfaction and concern with weight and appearance among women have been documented through a large number of studies. What other studies have found is that a lot of adolescent girls hold this standard for beauty with includes thinness. Studies have also found that girls feel pressured to look and act a certain way because of the media surrounding them days in and out. The writer of this journal believed that physical appearance will be one the girl's most top priorities.

The way this experiment was carried out was through a survey. The participants were 306 girls recruited from seven catholic high schools in metropolitan Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. The schools all served families of middle-class socioeconomic status. The girls were all eleven years old. These students were asked to complete questionnaires on life concerns, leisure activates, body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and self-esteem during an ordinary class period. Each variable had a different scale as to how they were measured. The instructions asked girls to "to think about your own life at the moment" and then to rate the importance from not at all important (1) to extremely important (5
