Motivation
The topic of motivating employees is extremely important to managers and supervisors. I have decided to see how two companies in different markets choose to motivate their employees. The first company I chose was Sony. The second company I chose was Nike. These are two totally different Businesses in totally different markets. I sent off letters to Sony and asked them how they motivated their employees. They told me that they give their employees a chance to motivate themselves. They said that you can't motivate people anymore than you can empower them. Sony's employees have to motivate and empower him or herself. However, you can set up an environment where they best motivate and empower themselves. The key, is knowing how to set up the environment for each of your employees. Sony explains, "Motivating employees starts with motivating yourself". If an employee hates his or her job, it will seem (to that person) like everyone else does, too. If they are very stressed out, it will seem like everyone else is, too. Enthusiasm is contagious. If you're enthusiastic about your job, it's much easier for others to be, too. In one of the letters they told me that 'delegation includes conveying responsibility and authority to your employees so they can carry out certain tasks.' However, you leave it up to your employees to decide how they will carry out the tasks. Skills in delegation can free up a great deal of time for managers and supervisors. It also allows employees to take a stronger role in their jobs, which usually means more fulfillment and motivation in their jobs, as well. This I think is a good motivational tactic. As with Sony, Nike too has decided to opt for Mcgregor's theory (y). This will help the employees to feel more trustworthy and have more responsibility; this often boosts motivation. Nike have a much more simple way of motivating their staff. In the letters I received from them, I found out that they have chosen to adopt Herzberg's hygiene factors. These needs are split up into just two groups, Hygiene factors and Motivation factors. The hygiene factors are the things a business has to provide to keep workers contented. These include clean, quiet and safe working conditions- as well as adequate rest breaks. Motivating factors are the things that will encourage workers to do their best; like praise from managers, career advancement for good workers, and more responsibility.
