F. Scott Fitzgerals Bio
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 24, 1896, his father and mother were "both of catholic and Irish descent" (Meyers). He was given three names Francis Scott Fitzgerald after the writer of The Star Spangled Banner. Edward Fitzgerald's great-great-greatgrandfather was the brother of Francis Scott Key's grandfather. (Cowley) Both of his parents came from different backgrounds. His mother came from a family where money meant position, stability and security. But on his father's side "right instincts, good manners, the need for honor, courtesy and courage"(Mizener) were what was important. His father, Edward failed as a manufacture of wicker furniture in St. Paul and became a salesman for Procter & Gamble in upstate New York. (Mizner) His father went through many financial and drinking problems and this caused Fitzgerald to fear poverty and alcoholism. His mother, Molly's family emigrated from Ireland in 1843 and started a wholesale grocery business in Saint Paul that was very successful. (Meyers) He loved his father, but could hardly respect him and his feelings for his mother were even more complicated. In the fall of 1931 the Fitzgerald's returned to Montgomery. Fitzgerald's 'Babylon Revisited' was written. The story is about Charlie Wales and family. The story is a lot like Fitzgerald's life with Zelda and his daughter Frances, the only thing different is the names used in the book. "Charlie's wife dies because of her reckless life of drinking and partying and he sends his daughter to live with family members" (Cowley). Charlie begins to look at his life and how he always hid behind the drinking and partying and he didn't want to end up like his wife so he decides to become sober and make something of himself. "After getting help to be sober, steady, and reliable and goes to get his little girl" (Cowley). Charlie goes out with friends and gets drunk and has to start all over again. He wanted his child, and nothing was going to stop him. "He wasn't young any more, with a lot of nice thoughts and dreams to have by himself" (Cowley). Tom Buchanan has many affairs while he is married to Daisy. His affair with Myrtle Wilson who is unhappy in her marriage to George Wilson who was not affluent by any means. Gatsby and Daisy were lovers before he went of to the Great War. When they were reunited, they became inseparable; a lost love found. Fitzgerald's instant success for 'This Side of Paradise's' was enough to win back Zelda Sayer's attention and she married Fitzgerald the following week in New York City, on April 30, 1920. Fitzgerald thought he had it all. The Fitzgerald's celebrated at parties and Zelda danced on people's dinner tables. Their debts started to grow and in the spring "Zelda discovered that she was pregnant and Fitzgerald rushed The Beautiful and the Damned to completion so that they could take a quick trip abroad for the summer" (Mizner) to Europe. October 21, 1921. "His daughter Frances also known as Scottie was an only child because Zelda had an infection that damaged her reproductive organs" (Mizner). The Vegetable; or, From President to Postman (1923) The 'Beautiful and the Damned' was Fitzgerald's second novel and less successful then 'This Side of Paradise'. 'The Beautiful and the Damned' a story of "a rich young married couple dancing on the edge of doom" (Brucccoli). Living and liking the New York party life, Anthony Patch marriage to Gloria falls apart because of the partying and her selfishness. Gloria's beauty fades and Anthony's drinking gets worse. Anthony is a smart man, but sensitive and weak. He spends his grandfather's money drinking and Gloria leaves him. A lot of people thought that the Prohibition was the funniest. More Americans drank for the fun of it. Wine, whiskey, and beer were smuggled into the country and some even made their own home brews. The words bootlegger, bath tub gin, speakeasy, rumrunners and moonshine all were born during this time. (Grandfather) The women of the 20's were given equal freedom to men when the ratification of the 19th amendment. Women were able to drink in the bars and giving women their constitutional right to vote.
