Lord of the Flies : Leadership

A detailed Summary of Lord of the Flies : Leadership

Through out time, leaders have possessed many different qualities and characteristics that made them effective and efficient leaders. Many of these qualities are represented in characters, in the book, "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. The protagonist, Ralph, starts off as the leader of a tribe of boys, but then, another boy, Jack, overtakes Ralph and the tribe, becoming the leader. Different decisions and actions lead to the development of leadership qualities of both Ralph and Jack. Jack, usually takes quick, immediate action, not thinking about consequences, if anybody actually thought about following Jack, and what he stands for, he would have no followers, but, he is a great leader, and is able to whip people into such a frenzy, that they cannot think about their actions, and just follow the crowd. Ralph, on the other hand, has a more calm, thought-out way of leading and decision making. His actions usually benefit his people as a whole, and help everybody in one way or another, as opposed to Jacks, who just does things on a whim, who just does things to have fun.

Ralph posses many qualities that add to, and decrease his effectiveness as a leader. Just about every decision Ralph makes, will either help the

The more successful leader on the island, Jack, posses the qualities of a leader that would command a rebellion or uprising. He likes to whip people into such a frenzy, they will follow any command shouted at them, weather it would harm or help themselves and the people around them. A good example of this, would be the tragic death of Simon. "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in! The sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and creamed. The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill." In this scene, the group of boys is chanting, and it drives them to such a bloodlust, that when their friend Simon arrives, they kill him. Jack also gets people to follow him, by choosing what the "public" wants. Instead of doing boring things that Ralph wants, Jack gets people to hunt, and wear paint with him. This obviously attracts more followers than Ralph does with his tactics. Eventually, Jack takes over Ralph's whole tribe with promises of better times. " I gave you food, and my hunters will protect you from the beast! Who will join my tribe?" This type of leadership is effective for a while, but in the long run, it doesn't work out.
