The media nowadays plays a big role in our lives. Whether printed or broadcasted it is present in everyone's life, regardless of their social class. Examples of media are things such as TV, Internet, periodicals, music, and periodicals. A common assumption is that an individual have the power to choose, but are we really making our own choices? Or are we being influenced by the media to make our choices without even knowing. To what extent does media influence the way we live? Are the rules society impose on us being reinforced and applied to us by the mass media? The television certainly was the greatest invention from the past century. With it, we were able to watch and witness various important moments of our history, such as the first American man on the moon. In the western world, millions of people watch television everyday. It became part of our cultural habits. We use television to inform, entertain, and sometimes even learn as schools and teachers adopted it, as part of their teaching techniques. Every person regardless of age has its own favorite show or movie they can not miss. Children usually enjoy cartoons, adults have a big variety of shows to choose from. Incidentally is our taste, influenced by who we are?
Another effect of music in our lives is the role models music celebrities play. Their fame and richness make fans take them as heroes to be imitated and admired. Wrong choices made by these "stars", can influence fans, to use those role models to excuse their followed bad decisions. Some Psychologists believe that Television determines our behavior, positively and negatively sometimes. These negatives sides of television affects more children and teenagers than adults. Parents and teachers, have noticed that kids nowadays, who watches television everyday are far more aggressive than the ones of their own childhood. Indeed, various children's cartoons are violent. Their main characters are usually strong, brave and, always fight "the evil" using weapons and martial arts. Thus, kids like to play by interpreting their favorite cartoon's characters. In addition many movies with sexual, violence and strong language content, are shown on television during the morning and afternoon, which are usually times when children watch television. Also TV shows transmits to us what is normal and abnormal in our society, showing us the rules that we have to follow to be accepted. Violent behavior followed by strong contents on television, has made kids become desensitized regarding the society values. The most old and cheaper media tool is the newspaper.
