The Beatles
There have been more books published about one twentieth century icon than any other, this band that is said to have broken down barriers in all ways, is the Beatles. Their music was said to have driven that younger generation mad. Perhaps it was because they were one of the first bands to ever play real rock and roll music; or maybe it was those cute little pea coats they wore. Or maybe it was just because they were foreigners in the world of music, yet seemed to fit right in with the young people. Whatever the reason was, the Beatles were a band that shaped a generation and ones soon to come. The Beatles were "born" in Liverpool, England in the late nineteen fifties. John Lennon, inspired by a skiffle craze sweeping England, went out, bought a guitar, and started his own band, the Quarrymen. The members of this band changed frequently, but had a pretty solid line up by October of nineteen fifty-nine, consisting of Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and drummer Colin Hanton. In March of nineteen sixty, Lennon had one of his art school friends, Stuart Stucliffle join the band playing bass. Stuart suggested the name the "Beetles." By summer, they were the "Silver Beetles," and then finally deciding on the "Beatles" in Au
Nineteen sixty-four was the absolute most important year of their careers. Nineteen sixty-four was the year they conquered the biggest record market of the world, America. "The charting of "Love Me Do," McCartney later said, was what convinced him the Beatles were going to make it." (Hertsgaard, 30) The Beatles had produced many successful albums and singles following the time the released their music in America. But only six short years later, on April ten, nineteen seventy, news papers around the world screamed with variations of "PAUL MCCARTNEY BREAKS UP THE BEATLES." This announcement shocked the world. Not only was this a disappointment to the entertainment industry, but a significant marker in history. The breaking up of the Beatles was as significant as the assassination of a president, or the July nineteen sixty-nine United States moon landing. The break up was extremely surprising. Paul, Ringo, and George strictly avoided the media, and refused to talk about the break up. John Lennon only talked once, a year afterward. He talked to a reporter from the Rolling Stone, and only gave vague answers as to why the beloved band broke up. What the public wanted to blame easily on something like Lennon and McCartney's wives, the Beatles knew was much more intimate. This to them this "was a painful, intimate matter, a personal crisis of untold proportion that tore at the heart of their identities and drove them apart from their dearest friends, their virtual blood brothers. The inevitable feelings o
