Jacqiline M. Martinez's Phenomonology of Chicana Experience & Identity is a an account of her life taken from a semiotic phenomenological standpoint. She grew the child of a Mexican but was raised as a white person. While at the same time she was a Mestiza. She prides herself on being just that, a mix between the races. Based on the latter, she derives her citation offered in the question. Being partly from an oppressed race, where she is hated by the Mexicans for being partly European, and hated by the Europeans for not being totally Anglo, she wishes to "bridge the borders" created from years of harsh sentiment towards the Mestiza. She feels that the Mestiza can do this because of her advantageous position, as was stated in the previous statement.

In Martinez's "Struggle In the Flesh," she discusses how, while she was in elementary school she heard of the missions established along the Californian coast. She blindly believed, just as many other Mexican- Americans believed, that they were overall a positive thing for the people. However, she wasn't told of the struggle of the people, "..to retain their cultural and personal possessions." Here, Martinez realizes that the white community was held in the dark about the struggles going on in the Mexican community. She claimed that education served to "erase the not only the struggles of Native and Mexican- Americans as Americans but also the essential role that Native ad Mexican Americans have played in the history of this land." Many Americans don't know of the cultural greatness that so aptly described Mexican culture. This ignorance of a culture can perpetuate a racist society.
