A Good Man is Hard to Find
In "A Good Man is Hard to Find," Flannery O'Conner clearly defines the southern culture as hypocritical, as well as describing southern women perfectly. It is the title story of her short story collection, A Good Man is Hard to Find. The story is based around a good family trip turned bad. The family is planning a trip to Florida as their family vacation. Flannery O'Conner uses several different ways to get her point across about how she feels about southern culture. She uses the grandmother to show how shallow southern women can be. She uses the misfit to show the evil in society. She uses the children to show a breakdown in respect for authority figures and adults. This story is very entertaining because it had a perfect mix of humor, drama, and action. It is told from a third-person narrative, but the focus of the story is put on the Grandmother. In Flannery O'Conner's "A Good Man is Hard to Find," she use characters and story line to express her views on the south and southern religion. First, the characters play an important role in expressing her views. The Grandmother is the primary and most important character in the story. She is supposed to be a very religious person, but she seems to have a very shallow per
Bailey, the father is the son of the Grandmother. He drives the car throughout the story. He makes many empty threats at the children to try to make them be quiet. He seems to be somewhat of a coward. He allows his mother to boss him around as if he is still a child. He allows his wife and the children to run all over him the entire story. He was not an important character, and it was seemingly fit that he was the first to be killed. The next character in order of importance is the Misfit. The reader never finds out his real name, which is to make him seem more dangerous, more mysterious, and more of a real bad guy. The Misfit is an escape convict who is running loose in Florida. The Grandmother is afraid of him the whole time, even before they leave for the trip. An example of the Grandmother's fright is shown in the following passage from the story: Although many people have bad views of this story, it is a wonderful story with a character that fits perfectly, and an amazing story line. The Grandmother, The Misfit, the children, and the father all contrasted each other so much that they all leveled out the others bad qualities. The ending of the story was very shocking; I believed The Misfit would let the Grandmother go, but instead he shot the Grandmother three times in the chest. He then makes the comment, which is best quote from the story, "She would have been a good woman,' The Misfit said, 'if it had been somebody to shoot her every minute of her life" (O'Conner 13). Overall this story was not a disappointment; I was intrigued and drawn in every line of it. In Flannery O'Conner's "A Good Man is Hard to Find," she use characters, and story line to express her views on the south and southern religion. Next, the children, June Star and John Wesley, show how modern children do not respect authority as much as the generation before them. Every generation seems to think that the generations after them have less respect then they do for their elders. They are continuously fighting in the car. It was their fighting that causes their father to turn the car around and take the dirt road to the old family plantation. A plantation that was not there after all because the Grandmother realized that it was in another state. The children are wild little tyrants who really need to be disciplined by their father. They say just about anything that they like, with no consequences. "They fight, manipulate their parents to get their way, and make fun of their grandmother often" (MonkeyNotes 1). The Grandmother is an old lady with old-fashioned ideas and manners. Many critics say that they think that the Grandmoth
