Good Country People
The universal theme of " Good Country people" is a person's outward appearance can be deceiving, no one is really the way they appear to be. A person might represent themselves as being sweet, charming and trust worthy, while in actuality they're the complete opposite of who they really are, which was the case for the character Manley Pointer in the story " Good Country People". " Good Country People" takes place in a small country town, somewhere in the south or midwest. The people living in that town are good hearted, trusting and naive to the cruelty of the outside world and clueless to some people's hidden intentions. Mrs. Hopewell is a typical country woman; she lives with her daughter Joy, who's thirty years old and have wooden legs. One day a stranger claming to be a bible salesman showed up at her door step. The two of them started conversing about life, religion and everything in general. She was very fond of his generosity and Joy also was taken by his charm. Pointer and Joy went out the next day. Every con artist knows our weakness and is always willing to exploit them. No matter how much we try to hide them, it will always show. Therefore, one should always be alert of those who's looking to manipulate them. However, Joy would be a little bit more difficult. She wasn't taken by his charm at first, " Get rid of the salt of the earth and let's eat." (123). He tried to gain her attention repeatedly, but to no avail. Joy had given him one look on being introduced and through out the meal not once did she made eye contact. When he tried speaking to her, she pretended not to hear him. But as time went on, even joy and her skepticism was taken by his charisma. She had finally caved and agreed to see him the next day. During the date, he sweet talked her like a true sale's man, " You're a brave sweet little thing and I liked you the minute I seen you walk in the door."(126). He gave her compliments about her looks, personality and everything else to win her over. " I like girls that wear glasses." (126). He began to tell her that they were destined to be together, according to their similarities, " Don't you think some people was meant to meet on account of what all they got in common and all."(127). He proceeded kissing her and telling her how much she meant to him and that he loves her. With sweet gestures like these, Joy began falling for him, which wasn't her initial intention.
