Military Intervention in Afgha

Justification for retaliation against acts of hatred proves to be very difficult to develop, maintain, and most of all prove. The September 11th assault that "was so sudden and so shocking that it seemed to obliterate many of the doubts that were the legacy of the country's tortured Vietnam experience. Polls show that up to 90% of Americans support a military response," wrote Mark Barabak. However was this support justified? Would a military response that would destroy yet another nation be moral? That would tear apart families, leave orphans, and spawn more hatred and vengeance? I believe that not only does the current military intervention in Afghanistan do all this but it creates other damages to nations other than Afghanistan nor does it account for the lives lost in the battle that is supposedly between right and evil, but rather in my eyes, evil and those who want to get back at evil.

The pulverizing of a battred country just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of innocent civilians have already been killed by U.S. bombing in pursuit of Osama bin Laden. The Pentagon has confirmed numerous instances of "collateral damage," including a 2,000-pound bomb that struck a residential area near Kabul. Th

The global coalition of states that the US is setting up to undertake its self-declared "war on terrorism" is illegitimate. It comprises governments that are the major profiteers in the global arms trade, possess virtually all the world's stock of weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical and biological), have caused great ecological devastation, and are also responsible for many acts and campaigns of ethnic cleansing and international terrorism, even genocide, that have taken place over the last 50 years. That this coalition should now be authorized and empowered to wage war on one of the poorest countries in the world violates the most elementary principles of justice and offends basic values of decency and concern for our fellow human beings. (Newsweek Editorial I can't Find to put in my bibliography)

Allowing the Northern Alliance to regain power in Afghanistan is simply not the solution. That will solve nothing and will only make matters worse. We need to find another solution. Most importantly, we need a solution which will enable the four million Afghan refugees to return safely to their country.

Our attacks on population centers are causing a huge refugee problem that neighboring countries can't handle. By October 12, 350,000 people had amassed in the northern Panjsher Gorge and over 150,000 had fled to the provinces of Tahor and Badakhshan.(Barabak) United Nations officials predict that 1.5 million will leave their homes, risking mass starvation in the brutal Afghan winter to escape the bombings. (Kurtz)

Afghanistan's current crises can only be disentangled if the warlord like government of the Taliban is replaced and the al-Qaeda organization is swiftly put to justice. The Taliban and al-Qaeda are roots of a bottomless pit. As soon as they reap the fruits of terror that they have thrust upon the helpless hoards, justice will begin to be realized. Once expelled a broad based democratic government, where all tribal minorities in Afghanistan are represented, should be implemented. However, military intervention is not the key to do this. It is not a justifiable course of action. It leads to death, destruction and mayhem. It leaves refugees that create a burden on an innocent country. Military intervention would tear apart countries and spawn discrimination of a new form, and hatred that has never been seen before. Military Intervention is not the solution to the War on Terrorism but rather a catalyst for further retaliation against the United States.

More than the money is required for the upkeep of the refugees, there are other kinds of price. Firstly, the devastation caused to the environment of the Frontier province is long-term as a result of trees chopped down for fuel. Police under certain circmstances are not allowed to apply the laws of the land to the Afghan population. Then they have entered a range of professions and trades, depriving locals of employment opportunities since they are willing to work for lower wages. It is estimated that 50,000 Afghans are working in Quetta alone. (Kurtz) Their involvement in crimes of all kinds is aggravating an already grim law and order situation. And their presence in large numbers provides the foot soldiers for the extremist religious groups and the jihadi outfits that have virtually established a state within a state.

Consider something called the "mens rea" analysis of criminal law. In criminal law, purpose and knowledge are equally culpable states of mind. An action taken with a purpose to kill is no more culpable than an action taken with some other purpose in mind but with knowledge that a death will probably result. The action is the same regardless of the intent. (www.XFere.com)

If the Northern Alliance takes power, experts predict a new flood of heroin across the globe. According to U.N. officials, Afghanistan produces about 75 percent of the world's opium, (Kurtz and Blackboard Student Postings) which is used to make heroin. While the Taliban gov
