The Scarlet Letter-Injustice
In order to understand how injustice is portrayed in "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the reader must analyze all of the different symbols and imagery used by Hawthorne. Two pertinent examples of this are through the light imagery and symbols of punishment. The injustice in this novel is clearly adultery, which was committed by Hester Pryne and the reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester is permanently punished for the crime by being forced to wear the letter "A" on her breast forever. This crime, however, runs its course through the story because Hester and Arthur are willing to run away together and live in their sin. One of the creative methods Hawthorne uses to display this injustice is through imagery of light. In the novel, the sun is used as a depictor of goodness and purity. When Hester commits the crime she is thrown into a dark prison and loses
Through various symbols, Hester is reminded of her punishment everyday. The most obvious reminder is the scarlet letter that is worn on her chest. This was the social form of punishment that the puritans used to forever make her stand out. Another daily reminder of the crime is Pearl (Hester's daughter) which was a direct result of the sin. Pearl is what you would call a crazy child and frequently reminds Hester of the crime such as when Pearl "...took some eelgrass, and imitated, as best she could, on her own bosom, the decoration with which she was so familiar with of her mothers ... the letter A"(171). Also when Hester throws the letter off and calls for Pearl, she will not come to Hester because she can't recognize her mother without the presence of the letter. One of the more creative forms of punishment Hawthorne incorporates is the meteor, which is directed
