During the early 1900's, politics in Connecticut, particularly the growing metropolis of Hartford, were generally similar to the rest of the nation. Connecticut was run by Democrats and Republicans, and partially influenced by political machines. Corruption in Connecticut was not as severe as in other states and political organizations. Political machines were dominant in Connecticut, especially Hartford, as you read about the Roraback machine that dominated the Democratic Party for many years. It is not certain, however, if there was definite large-scale corruption. Obviously, if political machines are being used, then bribery, cheating, and monopolizing are evident. This was not on a large scale though. In comparison to corporations such as Rockefeller and Standard Oil Company, who bribed many political officials and other companies to get his way, corruption of that nature was not clearly evident in the politics of Connecticut. Overall, politics on Connecticut were similar to those in the rest of the nation. The Republican machine did overpower democrats in many situations, which some may call unfair, but that is what politics is all about. Although corruption was not a large part of the politics in Connecticut, it still was evident. People like J. Henry Roraback dominated the Republican Party with wealth and power over many other politicians, even some from the Democratic Party. Connecticut's political system was not perfect, but no state at the time, or, for that matter, no states political system in present time is perfect. J.
