Reconstruction
In many ways the Reconstruction helped the nation as a whole, but on the other hand it didn't give many opportunities for the blacks from gaining their equality. Reconstruction was the method of rebuilding the nation that followed the American Civil War. It began under President Lincoln before the close of the war, and was carried on by President Johnson after the assassination of President Lincoln, during the years 1865 and 1866. Afterward there was a second phase of reconstruction, known as the congressional plan, which undid all that had been done by Presidents Lincoln and Johnson. This following period was the greatest trial that the South had to bear, not excepting the terrible ordeal of war. Even though the blacks gained some equality after the Civil War, the rights were mostly taken back as the Southern states were readmitted back into the Union by creating the Ku Klux Klan, black codes, and sharecropping. The newly freed southern slaves gradually learned that the freedom they received was not as they had anticipated. There are many misguided schemes that collapsed because of either radical excess or a democratic experiment that did not go far enough. The lack of land and reforms which would give African-Americans power to defend their interests as free citizens Reconstruction left significant legacies, including the 14th and 15th amendments which remained as the symbols of the democratic idealism that swept Congress in the 1860s. Sharecropping was another issue the blacks faced during the Reconstruction. Sharecropping was formed as the South began to face many dangers in their agricultural economy. Without land, the former slaves were forced to work out a new relationship with their former owners. After the Civil War, because the southern economy was cash poor and Blacks demanded some type of autonomy, sharecropping developed as a replacement for slave labor. It was mainly shaped by mutual dependency in the years immediately following the Civil War, but it rapidly developed into a kind of modern-day feudalism. Landowners gave African Americans a plot of land to work in return for a share of the crops. Sharecropping at first seemed to be a good bargain for the ex-slaves. The
