Exchange Programs

A WINDOW TO THE WORLD

Suddenly, you wake up and find yourself in a room you have never seen before. You open the door and go down the stairs. You want to see something which is similar for you. The decorations, tables, chairs, pictures, and everything you see is different from your culture, and your traditions. Then, you remember that you are not in your own home. Last night you left your family, and your home. You are now in your new home away from your country. You have to live with a different culture for a certain amount of time as an exchange student.

Before World War II, and after World War II, the world has seen many major and minor conflicts between nations. Because of these problems and people's desperation for peace, the exchange programs were established and have been improved. The exchange programs provide a way for peace, so they are important for the world and for the globalization.

The exchange programs fuse different cultures. The students studying abroad should get used to a different culture. To get used to a different culture the students should learn that culture. Different cultures have different ways of looking at and valuing life. They have different outlooks and perspectives that are embodied in their ways of thinking, behaving, and communicating. And this is what students gain from exchange programs. The exchange students gain a deep image and better understanding of their own culture. By this way, students can understand the differences between cultures and this makes a way for peace. They can also gain the ability of adaptation, independent thinking, and build self-sacrifice because they need to learn the way to survive in the new culture. They are alone to decide the bests for them and they have to endure their choices' consequences. However, the people who are against exchange programs say that the students try to adapt to a different culture and they have some problems such as "cultural shock". "The cultural shock stage begins roughly at the end of the first month and extends until the fourth month. Generally, it covers a three-month period. This stage somewhat overlap
