A detailed Summary of Primo Levi


How was Primo Levi and the other like him dehumanized in order to survive? There are many points in the book where this comes up but three most rememberable and important ones. The first and most important is that these people live from day to day by stealing from the sick and healthy alike. Another is the permanent marks they will have on there body. Finally free will, and how they live like mindless slaves, with out any care if they live or die. It is Primo Levi's story of being captured as an Italian partisan in December 1943 and shipped to Poland as a Jew, but there he is changed forever to something in my opinion more, because he has seen both extremes of life.

Levi writes, "to eat only the ration, to observe the discipline of the work and the camp" In other words the society is set up so that if one follows the rules, one dies. A man has to have a cunning ability to steal. He has to finagle extra rations of soup and less-strenuous workloads. In order to continue to live Levi give up moral and decent standards of living, he must live in constant fear that at any moments he will be caught, doing something wro


To have a mark on your body that you know will always be there and is your identity is complexly degrading and impossible for any of us to understand. We have all recognized ourselves as names, but if I was branded like a cow and was known as a number I'm sure I would soon become one of the "drowned". Each time these people would look down for the rest of there life they would see the scars of camp and remember, every time one would look on there back they would remember, and every time you look at the scars on ones feet one would remember the most incomprehensible evil ever done by one human to another was done to you.

In the book, Survival in Auschwitz, Author Primo Levi describes the method used by imamates to survive the concentration camps. However the inmates were forced to give up there humanity in order to do so. Using examples in the book, describe the dehumanization of inmates that was required in order to survive.
