Macbeth vs. Lady Macbeth
Treason is an act that is frowned upon heavily. Even conspiring to kill the king could get a person killed. To actually go forward with this act, one must have a strong hatred for the king or benefit greatly from the results. The characters in Shakespeare's Macbeth have spoken many times of murder. While Macbeth is with Banquo, three witches come to them and forecast Macbeth to become king, and Banquo's sons to be his predecessors. Recently, King Duncan was killed, setting the stage for Macbeth to become king. Although Macbeth did the actual killing, Lady Macbeth was more responsible for the murder of Duncan because Lady Macbeth accused Macbeth of being afraid, Lady Macbeth told Macbeth how easily they would be cleared of the murder, and because she told Macbeth that his thoughts were wrong. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth were talking of Duncan's murder, and Lady Macbeth tried to talk Macbeth into going through with the plan by saying, "Art thou afeard/ T
Lady Macbeth has done almost everything but kill Duncan herself. She imposed her will on Macbeth and talked him into committing the murder. She kept saying how a little water clears them of the deed and questioning his manhood. Macbeth had dismissed the idea of killing Duncan until speaking with Lady Macbeth again, which shows that Lady Macbeth was more responsible for the murder of Duncan because of her pressure, actions, and words Macbeth finally killed Duncan. o be the same in thine own act and valor/ As thou art in desire? (I vii ll. 43-45) In this quote, Lady Macbeth brazenly questions Macbeth's desire to become king. She asks if he is afraid and tells him he should act like a king because that is what he truly desires to be. When analyzed, this quote from Lady Macbeth proves how selfish he is, because she assumes that he would do anything to achieve what he wants as she would, but this is not true.
