The Tempest
Prospero's intrigue by magic is what drives him into his troubles and yet frees him of those same troubles. Gonzalo supplies Prospero with the magical books for his studies. Prospero becomes so engrossed in his studies that he eventually almost gives his entire dukedom to his brother Antonio without realizing it. Prospero devoted his afternoons on the island to the study of magic. The symbols of Prospero's knowledge of magic are his robe, his wand and his books. At the end of the novel he agrees to burn all these objects if the nobles would just admit to their sins. Prospero's robe in itself performs magic by masking his personality when he wears it. Prospero uses his magic only for good causes. Unlike the witch Sycorax who is in partnership with the devil. When Caliban attempts to rape Miranda Prospero punishes him by making him carry wood and the only reason Caliban does is because he is afraid of the spirits that Prospero might set upon him to torment and pinch him. Prospero also punishes the nobles with magic. Prospero makes the ship come to the island by creating a storm which ruins the ship and leaves the passengers stranded in the sea and therefore able to float to the island with the assistance of Prospero's magic. Prospero's relationship with Caliban starts off well and ends well but in the midst of that it is pure turmoil. When Prospero first arrives on the island Caliban shows him all the fertile land and all the great things on the island. In return Prospero takes Caliban in almost as a son and lets him use his home. Prospero also throughout the years taught Caliban to speak and also taught him how to act like a human. However, this all ends when Caliban attempts to rape Miranda. Prospero is furious with him and has good reason to feel this way. Propspero does not become angry in the play unless it is justified and this was. After this, Prospero makes Caliban work for him by carrying wood and Caliban obeys Prospero for fear of Prospero's spirits that will come and pinch him. Accordingly, when Prospero finds out about the plan of Caliban, Stpehano and Trinculo to kill him, take Miranda and become the rulers of the island he is full of rage. Prospero sets the dogs on Caliban because he knows that the only way they will take their actions is seriously is if pain is inflicted upon them. He does not go beyond this however to punish them. He puts Caliban in a position of low standards so that it is hard for him to do wrong. At the end when Prospero is deciding on the final punishments of everyone he does not really punish Caliban but gives him back the full island. Prospero was very generous towards Caliban after he attempted to rape Miranda and wanted to murder him. Prospero should have ruined Caliban with his magic but instead did not really punish him. All in all, Prospero forgives Caliban for all the mischievous things he has done and returns him the power of the island. Prosperos is considerate yet stern when necessary towards the nobles in the tempest. Prospero's first trouble with the nobles is when his brother Antonio usurps him from his dukedom. Prospero had b
