Sons and Lovers
A detailed Summary of Sons and Lovers
This extract from D.H. Lawrence is based upon a mother living in a deprived area, raising two kinds and a husband. She is also burdened by a third child yet to come. It is made obvious that she is restrained and finds no real amusement in life. The author especially puts emphasis on Nature in this piece, to elaborate the colloquial style. Mrs. Morel's only hope in life are her children, whom she tries to dedicate her life, yet they do not seem to care too much about her. Towards the end, however, Mrs. Morel's hope vanished, "She went indoors, wondering if things were ever going to alter. She was beginning by now to realize that they would not."
To start off this extract, one of Mrs. Morel's children comes to speak, "He's helping to wait the Moon and Stars. I see him through that black tin stuff wi' holes in, on the window, wi' his sleeves rolled up." Firstly, we find out that the father works in a Tavern. Later we also discover that he serves beer in a public-house. Secondly, this child speaks in a dialect, which makes us believe that the family lives in a somewhat poor town, surrounded by underprivileged people. It is later made evident that the mother was raised up in a more wealthy environment, because of her non-dialectic sp

Simple language, repetition of words e.g. dreary and short sentences add to the simple style. Mrs. Morel undoubtedly wants to leave this dreary, ugly, mean place, but she can't. She is tied to her husband! He earns the money and without him she could not exist. Even though, he "swills" himself drunk, and she despises him, there's no hope in leaving this "pig".
Not only at the beginning, but also towards the end, it is apparent that Mrs. Morel is confined in her house. Her only delight is sewing, or it is a duty of hers. She has absolutely no life. "She straightened the kitchen, lit the lamp, mended the fire, looked out the washing for the next day, and put it to soak." She works the whole time. The last sentence, "...she was thinking how to make the most of what she had, for the children's sake", makes us think that she lives for her children, yet this is a contradiction to " What have I to do with this?" Personally, I think she has completely given up.
The author speaks of " women coming home from the wakes, the children hugging a white lamb with green legs, or a wooden horse". Clearly, there is a fair in town and the children are walking home with their mothers. This makes us wonder why Mrs. Morel is not or was not at the fair with her children. "White lamb with green leg
