Is the Sale and consumption of pornography morally permissible?

I argue that the sale and consumption of pornography is not morally permissible because of its distressing effects.

Pornography is an $8 billion per year industry. Pornographic magazines can be found at every newsstand; Adult bookstores and video stores can be found in every city. The sale and consumption of pornographic material is huge, but it shouldn't be. The sale and consumption of pornography is morally unacceptable because of its disturbing effects on the male viewer, the woman, and on society.

To clearly defend or oppose pornography we must understand what makes a work pornographic. As Philosopher Harold Gardiner, S.J., interprets it, " if a work is to be called pornographic it must, of its nature, be such as actually to arouse or calculated to arouse in the viewer or re

ader such venereal pleasure." Anything that is intended to cause sexual arousal. This includes books, movies, and photographed pictures. What defenders of pornography don't seem to want to understand is that these sexually explicit materials has troubling effects.

The male viewer of pornography can be easily sucked into a world where women are there to fulfill his every sexual desire. Psychological research has found that men exposed to pornography tend to be more aggressive toward women, and become desensitized to sexual violence. This is understandable. In pornographic films, women are tortured, raped, and beaten. They are also seen as enjoying it. This shows the male viewer that these types of behavior is needed to get the ultimate sexual satisfaction. After being heavily exposed to pornography, it is almost understandable that the male view will act aggressively toward women;
