Religion

As I was deciding on a religious foreign to me, I had a talk with one of my friends who is a Catholic, I quickly soon became intrigued with the basis on which Catholicism was formed and on how they conduct their worship to God. I realized how two Christian religions could be so different in belief, and doctrine. So with my curiosity at its peak I decided to ask my friend if he could bring me with him to their worship service. He soon told me that it was called Sunday mass but mass is celebrated during the week depending on the church. But most Catholics attend mass Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings.

As Sunday morning arrived I was a bit nervous to attend a Catholic mass, because of the unfamiliarity with gestures and posturing during the service. My friend reassured me that the people in the parish would be very welcoming and not treat me as an outsider. One of the first things I noticed in the church was the abundance statues and figures of Jesus

Christ. Crosses and crucifixes were plastered within the interior of the church along with the stained glass windows. Also interesting to me was how the Stations of the Cross were depicted along the walls of the church, and the huge crucifix that was emblazoned in the center of the church near the altar. As we took our seats I then realized one of the many differences between my worship service and service that I attended. The people did not sit in any order whatsoever in my worship service, the males and females sat on other sides of the church. The mass started out with the opening procession of the priest to the altar accompanied by 2 altar servers, and by a person holding up the Bible, with the priest at the end. Everyone was singing hymnals although the opening procession. As the opening ended the priest greeted the congregation with a prayer of thanksgiving to God, we were then seated. The priest then addressed the people about the today's gospel
