In both the book and movie Montana 1948 -Larry Watson and A River Runs Through It-Robert Redford. There is a character that ends up destroying himself without knowing that they are doing so. Both characters Frank and Paul die at of the story from earlier mistakes made in the story.
In the book Montana 1948 the character Frank is portrayed as the perfect person, he was a war hero, and then held a reasonable job as a doctor. Frank grew up in a very respectable family (The Hayden's) who name was held high in the community. In the movie A River Runs Through It the character Paul is portrayed as a wild and outgoing character, taking risk and pushing his limits, like when he and his brother Norman went over the rapids with their little boat. Norman goes off to college and returns years later, finding out new things about his brother that he missed wit his year away from Montana, but believes that he is still the same taking risk, such as the time when he brought his Indian girl into the club with him.
