"I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me," Abraham Lincoln said in a letter to A. G. Hodges, April 4, 1864. Although there have been many American presidents there is one that stands out among the rest. He died doing what he did best. Abraham Lincoln he has been the best president because he led the United States during the American Civil War, helped end slavery, and he was a magnificent leader.

During one of the hardest times in the United States history Abraham Lincoln led our country in the Civil War. The northerners and the southerners had two different opinions on how the government should be run. Abraham Lincoln he was a "peace maker" between the northerners and southerners. It is thought that the United States could have been split into two our more nations if Abraham Lincoln was not there to keep the peace. Although he might have been able to keep our country from splitting into two nations he was not able to stop the battles between the northerners and the southerners. The b


His persistent need to preserve the union was based on his dedication to the entirety of the nation. One of the many ways that Lincoln was able to help the war was by delivering his powerful speeches within the nation. Although he was certain that he would not go down in history for doing anything important he did whatever he could to help the union, without asking for any recognition. One of the other ways he showed excellent leadership skills was by knowing when he needed help and persisting on finding the right person to fulfill the duty that was bestowed upon them. Such as when he found Ulysses E. Grant to lead the union troops in a head to head in battle with General Robert E. Lee. Even though he was a man of upper class, people of different statures felt him to be trust worthy. He was not looking for fame; he just wanted to do whatever he could to help the nation as a whole and everyone in it.
