In June 1642, in the Puritan town of Boston, a crowd gathers to witness an official punishment. A young women, Hester Prynne, has been found guilty of adultery and must wear a scarlet A on her dress as a sign of shame. Instead of killing Hester the courts decided to put her on a scaffold for a significant amount of time. The scaffold, an important place of punishment in the American colonies, is a significant setting in the Scarlet Letter, because there Hester carried out her punishment, Chillingworth discovers the truth, and Dimmesdale regains his soul.

After the trial and conviction of Hester, her punishment is to be carried out. "'Open a passage; and I promise you Mistress Prynne shall be set where man, woman, and child may have a fair sight of her brave apparel, from this time till an hour part meridian,'" said the jailer as he escorted Hester to the scaffold. The second scene consists of all of the main characters. In the middle of the night Dimmesdale sneaks out of his house and goes toward the scaffold where seven years ago he also should have served punishment with Hester. "Without any effort of his will, or power to restrain himself, he shrieked aloud; an outcry that when pealing thorough the night, and was beaten back from one house to another, and reverberated from the hills in the background; as if a company of devils, detecting so much misery and terror in it, had made a plaything of the sound, and were bandying it to and fro." With this cry Dimmesdale thought he would wake the whole town and he would be free, but no one in the town awoke from their sound sleep. "'It is done!,' muttered the minister, covering his face with his hands. 'The whole town will awake, and hurry forth, and find me here!.' But it was not so. The shriek had perhaps sounded with a far greater power, to his own startled ears, than it actually possessed."
