As a child, Al started to become involved with some gang-related activities and also met some people that helped develop a lifestyle that shaped the way he would live. Capone, was born on January 17, 1899. Though living in poverty, their parent's provided a decent standard of living for their children. When Capone was old enough to start school Al's parents sent him to a public school in Brooklyn. Later he dropped out at the age of fourteen due to a fight with his teacher and the school's principal. Now, Capone had plenty of free time on his hands. Family members and friends noticed that Al was very wise when it came to living on the streets of New York. He had a clever and somewhat ingenious mind when it came to life on the street. He had what most people called "street smarts." Now that Capone was spending more time on the streets, he started to become interested in the gang life. He was involved in a few gangs, but nothing serious. At least until he joined the Five Point Juniors, which was a teen counterpart of the infamous Five Point Gang in Manhattan. Though Al was enjoying himself as a young gang member, he still pursued legal jobs and did not plan on making any illegal money. Little did he know, a man by the name of Johnny Torrio was surreptitiously watching the young gangster. Johnny Torrio had a small office in Al's Brooklyn neighborhood. (Taste of the Family) As a way to earn some money, Al began running errands for him. Al greatly respected Torrio and Johnny began showing Al how intelligence, not physical force, can be used to make millions. Johnny "The Brain" Torrio, or sometimes called, "Little Johnny" was born in Italy in 1882. (Taste of the Family) As Torrio became more and more famous he moved to Chicago to start his own independent business. He decided to unite all the gangs in Chicago along with the bootlegging industry. He called numerous gangs from the area to meet, and, his plan was, to have each gang control a certain area of Chicago with no intrusion by other gangs. For a secure territory, the gangs would have to pay Torrio a percentage of their profits. Torrio made thousands in this business for a extremely long time. In April of 1957, at the age of 75, Johnny "The Brain" Torrio died. Even though Al was young, it was no coincidence that he became involved with the neighborhood gangs and met Johnny Torrio.
