Pro-Anorexic Communities
Groups of people from all over the world who are struggling with body and food related issues are coming together in internet communities that support and promote eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa. These pro-anorexic communities have developed recognisable qualities of religious systems very similar to that of the Christian faith and fit Emile Durkhiem defination of religious phenomena and religion. A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to scared things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden- beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them.* Anorexia nervosa is a psychosomatic disorder, literally meaning lose of appetite although this is misleading. A person with anorexia nervosa is hungry, but he or she suppresses their hunger because of an irrational fear of becoming fat or more coherently a fear of all that is involved in growing-up and achieving physical maturation. The illness is also often tied to issues of low self esteem, poor body image and unrealistic ideas of perfection, the sufferers are often over come with feelings of hopelessness and helplessness and have an extreme need to control their surrounding
A general characteristic of all that is religious is the idea of the supernatural, or a supernatural being, something that surpasses the limits of our understandings.. "the belief in the omnipresence of something which is inscurtable."* Within these pro-anorexic (or pro-anna or ana ) communities the members are often found to personify and refer to their illness affectionately as Anna or Ana, Anna is a personality given to the irrational thoughts and feelings that take over the anorexics mind. Anna takes on an almost god like status in these communities and they may write letters, songs and even prays to her. Anna is the omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent force in their lives, she represents all that they do not fully understand. In a very renowned letter amongst "webrexics" from Anna to 15 year old anorexic which features on most pro-anorexic web-sites, the relationship the person has with Anna and the power this disorder has over them is frightening. The letter details Annas god like qualities, how she is everywhere and everything, "...I am with you always, I am there when you wake up in the morning and run to the scales....I am in your head, your heart, and your soul...I created you, this thin, perfect, achieving child "* The letter also talks about rules and punishment, effectively repenting for their sins, generally these are stemmed from the guilt of eating and the punishments are self inflicting harm. " You broke the cardinal rule and ate and now you want me back, into the bathroom, onto your knees, staring into the void of the toilet bowl... maybe the choice of getting rid of the guilt is different... prehaps I just make you hurt yourself...". The worshipping relationship the members have with Anna allows for the development of common moral bearings and that provide the individuals with a meaningful order and a secure set of boundaries to live within.* There is a unified system rules that define these boundaries feature on most of the pro-anorexic web-sites. These commandments are similar to the Ten Commandments of the Christian faith. The ten pro-anorexic commandments: 4. Thou shall not
