Narrative
Time was now our on our side. With the sun setting and the sky quickly changing to black, we prepared for our journey. It had long been said that the abandoned monastery in Glen Ellyn was haunted and that those who wandered the corroding halls would meet the after life. My friend Liz, who accompanied my best friend Jack and I, had heard from her sister that if you were in the halls late at night you would hear footsteps and screaming. On nights that there was nothing to do, kids older than us would go there and wander around looking for ghosts, and going up to the bell tower which stuck out so highly in the sky, to see the whole city and its lights. So like any curious sixteen year olds we had to experience it for ourselves. Waiting in the car were my friends Rob, Fabo, and Suzie. They were too spooked to go in. We had another force besides the afterlife working against us that the older kids didn't, the police. I guess the year before we made our attempt another kid from our city went in and broke his leg. Afraid of more lawsuits, the city had police patrolling the building at all times of day, and they added a fence directly around the building in hopes that it would keep us from entering.
"I don't think so", I mumbled. We sat in the ditch for fifteen minutes timing how long it took the cop to circle the building in his car. Every forty five seconds he would come to a spot that he could see us. So we had forty five Seconds to run down the hill across the dirt road, hop the fence and run across the courtyard to the broken down door and out of sight. It was possible but it was best if we all went at separate times giving us the option of splitting up and making it harder for them to find us. Jack volunteered to go first, and we decided that I should go last because I was the fastest, and the only one who wasn't petrified of being left by myself when the others were in already. "Can I help you, officer?" Jack exclaimed. They yelled at us to come over, so we walked to them. By now Liz was standing up, she seemed dazed and a little wobbly. They ordered us to come with them to their car so they could fill out our tickets we obeyed and began our walk. Once we arrived at the car the officers began to lighten up. They started joking with us and told us that the fine for trespassing was $500, and that if we were caught again we'd be imprisoned. The male officer commented on how stupid we were for yelling in the field and that the yelling was the reason they went out there. We quickly told them that it wasn't us yelling, and they were a little surprised. Since we were so polite they decided not to charge us, but let us off with a warning and call our parents to tell them what had happened. We knew our parents wouldn't be happy, but it beat a fine so we agreed. As we walked back to my car my cell phone began to ring. It was Rob, "I didn't want to call you earlier because we thought we might give you away, but we left almost right after you guys walked across the street," he said. We quickly decided we should go back and see if it was our other friends yelling, and to see what they wanted. As the cop passed by slowly and soon out of sight we waved Jack to come back to the ditch. Just as fast as he got into the monastery he came right back out. He dove head first into the ditch and asked us why we had waved him back. We told him about the noises and he agreed that we should figure out what was going on. As we walked through the field and towards the car we told each other that we would go right back once we figured out what our friends wanted. There were trees that lined the side of the property that didn't contain the brick wall so we were walking in a direction of a small clearing; it was the same way we entered. We waited for the gray Jeep Grand Cherokee Sport, with the markings "Glenn Ellyn Police Department", and the light bar on the top to pass I started smiling, as I normally do when I get nervous. Then the car was out of sight, Jack who had dreams of being an Army Ranger bolted down the side of the hill across the dirt road and climbed the fence like a monkey and was inside the Monastery in less than 35 Seconds. Liz started to prepare for the run; I could see she was scared. Her eyes were wide open and she was trying to take deep breaths to calm herself down, but it wasn't working. I reached out to hold her hand to comfort her and she quickly blew a sigh of relief. Then we heard a noise. It sounded like yelling coming from the field where we had entered. At first we couldn't make out what the voices were saying, but then the more we heard the screams the clearer it became. It sounded like the name Liz was being yelled out. Both of us looked at each other with puzzled looks on our faces. Then suddenly the hill stopped. It didn't stop going up, and it didn't even out. It just stopped. I crashed what must
