Why They Kill: Forensics
"I and the public know, What all school children learn. Those to whom evil is done, will do evil in return" (W.H. Auden). This quote is the basis to almost all forensic psychologists. It is a rough answer to the question: Why do they kill? Why do men, women, and children, assault, rape, mutilate and murder? Religions, ideologists, and every science that studies human behavior have offered their answers, yet, it is one question that will most likely remain unanswered for all of eternity. None of these ideas or theories creditably or authoritively explain the minds behind the evil and violent crimes that we follow up in the news every day. It is common sense to know that these certain people are not born violent. Poverty, subculture, race, and gender are all disqualified, due to the mass majority of exceptions. What's left? This is where the studies of Dr. Lonnie Athens, American criminologist, come into play. Because of Athens's personal experience of violence prepared him to find out not only the mass numbers of statistics, but allowed him to go between the lines, and find what other investigators may have missed. The book begins with Athens own story, moves next into his work and his studies, then tests his findings by exam
John Wayne Gacy, an amateur clown, was a pedophiliac homosexual. He tortured and killed thirty three little boys and stored their remains under his house. David Berkowitz, a.k.a. the Son of Sam, stalked New York City from nineteen-sixty-seven to nineteen-seventy-seven. He claimed to have been following a voice from his dog that told him when and where to kill. Ted Bundy, who is believed to have killed at least thirty-four people, was charged for only three under his own defense- and in fact, he was commended by the judge for his own defense. He was put to death. Athens main study were murderers, assaulters and serial killers. Yet he never came face to face with any serial killers, he came to a great theory by studying the cases of certain serial killers; Gacy, The Son of Sam, Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson and so on. He came to the conclusion of; popularity. "A partner of mine said he might come over to my pad with some broads, so I hurried over to the liquor store right around the corner to get a case of beer. As I was walking across the parking lot of the store, this guy almost ran me over. I flipped him off. The driver and his partners jumped out of the care and rat-packed me. They knocked me down, and the driver pushed my head into the dirt next to the cigarette butts. Then they went into the store. I just felt 'What a low fucking thing to do to somebody. They are just a bunch of yellow motherfuckers'. In my mind I suddenly thought 'I have to get back at these dirty motherfuckers', and I ran back to my pad for my rifle........ I kept trying to decide whether I should shoot to wound the motherfuckers or kill them. Finally, his two partners popped out of the door. I said to myself 'Fuck it, I'll shoot all of them'. I had stone hatred for them" (68-69).
