Crucible- Freedom to Speak Out

What responsibility does the individual have to speak out against social injustice, community wrongs, or civil law? Should a person speak against the majority; against all the odds to convey his ideas, weather they be correct or not? Should he be punished for what he has to say, even if what he says is true. Can society accept his ideas, or will he just be persecuted for speaking out? Should one take the punishment to speak out?

In the Crucible, by Arthur Miller, a character by the name of John Proctor speaks out against the town because he is being accused of witchcraft. Against all odd, he boldly defends himself. In a society ruled by the praise and prayer of God, Proctor speaks out against the entire society by declaring God is dead in his effort to defend himself from false accusations. While being falsely accused by Abigail and the girls, he states, "I say- I say- God is dead!" (Miller 119). Declaring that God is dead in a society where God is the Governer of thei


During Miller's time, An event called the McCarthy trials occurred. During the red scare, McCarthy made some wild accusations. He demanded that people who were supposed Communists give up names to other Communists in order to not be sent to jail. In the Salem Witch trials you either confessed or you were killed, so there was no way out if you were innocent. Same thing applied here, if you said you weren't a communist, you were jailed, and if you gave up names, your friends and family could hunt you down. So based on accusations ones life could be destroyed by McCarthy.

r way of life could have serious reparations. Proctor's ultimate punishment was his death, but throughout the play he never admitted to witchcraft or wrongdoing. He stood up for what he believed in and was killed for it, all based on circumstantial evidence. Actually he was killed based on the girls testimony, which was all lies.
