During Miller's time, An event called the McCarthy trials occurred. During the red scare, McCarthy made some wild accusations. He demanded that people who were supposed Communists give up names to other Communists in order to not be sent to jail. In the Salem Witch trials you either confessed or you were killed, so there was no way out if you were innocent. Same thing applied here, if you said you weren't a communist, you were jailed, and if you gave up names, your friends and family could hunt you down.
