In both the Poem, "A Dream Deferred," by Langston Hughes, and the play Romeo & Juliet, by Shakespeare, the importance of dreams is demonstrated using different literary devices. In the poem, "A Dream Deferred," Langston Hughes uses the literary devices of Personification and simile to show the importance of dreams. In the play, Romeo & Juliet, Shakespeare demonstrates the importance of dreams using the literary devices of Personification and hyperbole.
In, "A Dream Deferred," Langston Hughes uses similes to show the importance of dreams, "Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun." This symbol means that a dream that is disintegrating and dying like a raisin left out in the sun. Another example of a simile is, "Does it stink like rotte

In the play, Romeo & Juliet, Shakespeare uses personification to demonstrate the importance of dreams, "'Tis but thy name that is my enemy." Juliet feels that a name should mean nothing when you have a true love. Another example of Personification is, "Had I it written, I would tear the word." Romeo knows his family is an enemy to the Capulet, but if he had a choice he would switch sides to be with Juliet. Shakespeare also uses hyperbole to express the importance of dreams, "I'll be new baptized; henceforth I never will be Romeo." Romeo is saying that he would be newly baptized, which is an exaggeration because he is just trying to show his feelings for her.
