There have been many speculations about the cause of the tragic ending in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Some say it was a tragedy of character and some a tragedy of fate. Both of them play a big part in the development of the storyline. The two "star-crossed" lovers are faced with a dilemma because of their "rival" families. And it is no coincidence that events occur that lead to their deaths. Many facts come to prove that it really was a tragedy of character.

Right at the beginning, in the prologue, it is learned that the families of Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets and the Montagues, have been in a vicious feud for a very long time. This immediately starts a connection between the two lovers. The families are extremely aggressive towards each other and are always causing trouble in Verona where they live.
