The film A Beautiful Mind and the novel The Stone Angel both have a very important and interesting theme: when life throws you a curveball, love will always be there. A Beautiful Mind is a film about the life of John Forbes Nash, a Nobel Prize winner who struggled through most of his adult life with schizophrenia. It is a true story, not only of one man's fight to overcome his own disability, but of the overreaching power of love - a theme that has also been embraced by the book The Stone Angel. This novel deals with the life of Hagar Currie Shipley, a 91-year-old woman who is on a tumultuous journey to accept her own life, and prepare for death. Yet even though she attempts to wrestle against the inevitable, there is always a constant reminder: love is always the key to happiness. Thus, the film and the novel explore the true importance of love and its role our lives. Towards the end of the novel, Hagar reaches the final leg of her journey; accepting her fate instead of trying to deny she could ever cease to exist. She finds it "hard to imagine a world" with her "not in it" (pg. 250). She wonders if "everything will stop" (pg. 250) when she dies. Now she is ready to accept that she cannot change or overcome what happened in the past but only accept it to grasp a remnant of peace with herself and her family. She reconciles with Marvin in confirming him as a good son and she also looks within herself to discover what she has always wanted "simply to rejoice" (pg. 292). In the same way, John Nash comes to accept the circumstances before him. He is an incredible mathematician with a personality problem. Instead of trying to overcome the people and remarks of his double personality, John accepts his life, and like Hagar, embarks on a great lesson: life is what you make of it, but through and through, love will always be there even though you might not always feel it. The novel and film are both unforgettable tales about courageous characters and their struggle to learn about love and themselves. Hagar Shipley is a proud old woman determined to "do it alone" yet with love, she finally became a whole new woman and learned to bring kindness and love into her life.
