Family Studies
For decades, families have been portrayed throughout different areas of print media. Newspaper and magazine articles are among the types of media that have reflected different theories, definitions, and issues concerning families and society as a whole. Families are affected by many settings in which the individual does not take an active part in, but which have an affect on them. They are influenced by many social institutions such as schools, religious groups, laws, politics, the economy, pressure from activists and the mass media. As we leaf through sources of print media, we develop a different perspective on families, which can be related to the topics studied in NFO. Among the topics are society expectations for behaviour. For example, family members are not supposed to inflict harm on one another, but rather look after one another both physically and emotionally. Family behaviour is also limited by means of laws such as those against violence. Another important topic is the issue, which was raised about roles that occur in marriages. Conventional or traditional roles are based on the notion that the home is the proper place for women, while the labour force is the ideal place for men. The portrayal of the family in the pri
The structural functional theory explains that the family has a number of important functions in society. First, it provides physical protection for its family members and second, the family provides for the emotional well being of its members. It also socializes new individuals (Ward, 13). In the article entitled, "The people pay the price," Najla, a refugee and her husband risked most of their family's life savings in order to find help and cross the border to safety. That was seen as the only way to protect her family. In order to socialize her children and receive a proper education, Najla also risked sending her daughters to a secret school in Afghanistan, even though girls were banned to attend school under the Taliban regime. This also leads to the traditional role of the woman figure as the nurturer and the father as the breadwinner. Najla is seen as the emotional supporter and homemaker. She is also trying to secure the family unit. Her husband on the other hand is the moneymaker of the family, but is currently looking for an available job in order to support the family economically. Due to the tragic and unprecedented events that occurred on September 11 in New York, hundreds of Afghans' lives have been turned upside down. The article explains that many Afghans, as well as a women by the name of Najla and her family decided to smuggle to Pakistan due to the frightful conclusion that war was looming in their homeland. The exosystem has once again affected the family. Due to the unforeseen events, the family had to move to another country, and start over a new life, even though they weren't directly involved in the events of September 11. nt media is strongly reflected in the theories and data, which have been raised in NFO, such as the exosystem, family behaviour, and the structural-functional theory. Family life continues to be studied around the globe and seen in different areas such as the print media. Magazines and newspapers offer a wide range of articles including topics conc
