When one sees the number of teenagers' work-related injuries, they may become very appalled. Young workers face numerous safety and health hazards on the job. Because of inexperience and other such factors, teenagers end up being hospitalized and missing school because of their injuries. There are, however, several ways in which the employer can help reduce these risks.
One would never believe all the dangers that young workers have to face at their place of employment. Among these are falling on the same level, overexertion in lifting, being struck by a slipping handheld object, getting caught in machinery or equipment, as well as coming in contact with hot objects or substances. Young workers face an even greater risk. They are often hired in places where there is little opportunity for promotion, a high turnover rate, hardly any training at all, uncertain and great variation in hours, and basically no benefits at all. Young workers also don't receive an adequate amount of safety training, or in some places none at all. Half of the young workers who were surveyed said that they received no safety training at all. The lack of adult supervision also leads to occupational injuries. About 80% of all work-related injuries occur when there is no supervision by an adult. Young workers also are faced with schedules involving long hours either late at night or early in the morning. This may lead to fatigue which in turn increases the likeliness of an injury occurring.
