Writing: As A Career

I've always enjoyed writing for fun in my free time. What turned me onto writing was reading. I was always reading Stephen King books and one day I simply said to myself "Hey, I bet I can do this". So I did. At first, I started just writing about my day in my journal. After a while, I decided to try writing short, fiction stories. I had a lot of ideas that I had always wanted to write. I liked the way my stories came out, so I continued writing more often. It wasn't until recently that I have seriously considered writing as a career. I started to research about how to get my works published.

I was surprised to find that the process of getting a work published was a lot more involved than I had originally thought. I ignorantly thought that getting my works published was nothing more than sending a story or two to a publishing company, them liking it and setting up a meeting. I would come to their building and sit on one side of a long table and several men in penguin suits would be sitting on the other. I would be handed a contract with a fountain pen. There is a growing job market for writers, publishers, and journalists. Statistically, the job market for writing professions is supposed to increase faster than the average for all occupations by the year 2010. Though the job market is increasing, the competition for these jobs will remain high. The job market has increased because many writers are retiring, seeking other professions, or leave the labor force. Replacements needs continue to rise.

The job market for freelance writers is greatly affected by the amount of people reading in their free time. Statistics show that schools are assigning more reading for homework and emphasizing on reading more with students. With students reading more in school, it can be assumed that there will be more students reading in their free time.

Many new authors wonder about how much money they will receive as an author, and if it is enough to live on. For most new writers, it is unsure if writing will ever bring in enough money to live on, but this also goes back to making sure you have a good agent. A good agent will do their best to make sure you take on every opportunity in order to further your career as a writer. Most authors receive most of their income from a profession outside of writing. The average income for published writers last year was about $38,000.

For new authors, the best opportunities lie with seminars, conferences, and workshops. These are sometimes very vital places for people just entering the world of writing. Seminars, conferences, and workshops offer the names of many agents and publishing companies. Also, the seminars, conferences, and workshops will offer a lot of advise and answer many questions that new writers are curious or confused about.

If writing does not work out for me, teaching is always another occupation that I wou
