Abortion
Abortion has been a controversial issue since the idea was first introduced. The main issue of the debate is whether a woman's right to choose outweighs the unborn fetus's right to live. The right for a woman to have an abortion is part of a much broader issue: the right for a woman to decide what she can and can not do with her body and not letting someone else, specifically a man, decide for her. In some states, abortion is still not supported fully, being banned after certain stages. Abortion deserves to be available until at least the third trimester, and allowed at any time if the mother's health is at risk. There are still many that argue that abortion is immoral at all stages. The main argument of "pro-life" supporters, individuals opposed to abortion at all stages, is that the fetus in a woman's womb is a "human being", deserving the same rights as any other person. The idea that there is a human being from the time of conception is wrong. When the sperm and the ovum unite, a cell is created. To claim that this one cell is and should be treated as a human being is absurd. "It is as if someone claimed that one brick is already a house and should be treated with the same respect a full house deserves"1. Eve
There is a big difference between human fertility and the ability for a woman or couple to bring up a child properly and they should not be synonymous. A woman, whether fourteen or forty-five, should not be forced to continue a pregnancy and be obligated to a child for eighteen years. When an unwanted child is brought into this world, only bad results may come. "When a person is treated badly in his or her childhood, that inner violence manifests itself when he or she is grown up"1. A child that is deprived or neglected may grow up to maim, kill or rape. It is unfair to the child to be brought into a world where it is not wanted. If abortion is viewed as "murder", why isn't miscarriage viewed the same way. An average of many polls indicates about more than half of all embryos die through miscarriage, also called "spontaneous abortion". "If spontaneous abortions are an 'act of God,' to use the common religious expression, is it not strange that God has so little concern for fetal life that He allows so much of it to go to waste without intervening?" 1. If "God" is so concerned with the little fetuses, then why does he destroy them "under his own power" so often. This is why the statements of Christian workers are so hypocritical. They are so quick to condemn abortion ferociously but don't think twice about it if it happens spontaneously. "If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judge's determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth..." Even though the Bible should not be a basis for laws on this issue, the Bible does not even condemn abortion. The word "abortion" does not appear in the bible once. There is actually evidence in the Bible to suggest that the fetus in a woman is not recognized as a human being. In Exodus 21:21-25, it states that:
