In the past twenty-years, we have seen a growing number of single parents. About fifty percent of single mothers and fathers are not remarrying. The health of members of single-parent families may be poor, because of various conditions prevailing in this type of family set-up. Three of the main ones are: the financial situation, the accumulation of social roles, and the emotional life of members of single-parent families.

The financial situation of single-parent families is very often precarious. The income of a single parent earning minimum wage falls far short of what is required to be self-sufficient in many states, according to a report in the New York Journal. Even those parents that have well above minimum wage jobs are struggling to make ends meet. Single parents find themselves not able to provide all their family needs. Married parents may not be able to provide everything fo


r their families, but are able to get most of their needs. Married parent are confronted with this similar situation, but its not as stressful because there are two incomes coming into the household. They may feel the pressures just as a single family, but they have one another for moral support. An advantage both parents have, but a challenge for single parents.

With the percentage of single parents and the cost of living on the rise, we need to make cautious decisions in our lives. There is so much in just being a parent that all the emotion and overwhelming feeling of finding yourself single can be destructive to the parent as well as the child. Single and marry parents are confronted with the pressure of financial, society, and emotion, but we just need to keep moving forward. Society does not help much with their views and judgments on other, but as parents, we will do our best to protect our children from their hurtful comments.
