A detailed Summary of Soldier's Home


In regards to the hidden story in a "Soldier's Home" by Ernest Hemmingway we visualize the protagonist Harold Krebs as a hero nevertheless emotionally troubled because of the event of the World War. After the war Harold Krebs sleeps late, reads, eats, and sits on his front porch watching the girls walk by. Before going away to the war, Krebs was a loving son and brother. Being that Krebs was bought up in a Christian home he was sheltered from much of societies ills upon him entering into the armed forces he witnessed things that were foreign such as young women being bound to field weapons and forced to fight as soldiers.

We visualize the mother of Harold Krebs as the average loving mother who cares about her son's well being. Krebs' parents, like most parents, raised their son with beliefs very close to their own. Therefore, Krebs was raised in a strict Methodist home in a small mid-western town. He was taught not to cheat, lie, steal, or kill, and was also taught the "power" of prayer.


The hidden story of "Soldier's Home" is the story of Krebs, a Methodist student from Oklahoma. What role did Krebs contribute towards the war? Was Krebs role voluntary? As stated Krebs had to lie about the war so in event he was proud of himself. Krebs was recruited to volunteer in the war involuntarily; Krebs did not fight bravely in the war. Krebs admits to himself that he lied in public about his military experiences, but he cannot stop lying to himself about the real extent and the psychological effect of his lying. Lying makes Krebs feel lost within his self and in a sense bitter towards the war; there the theme of alienation sets in. We know for sure that he was "badly, sickeningly frightened all the time. Certainly his war experiences were not glamorous, and he brings home quite a collection of battle-scarred baggage, not the least of which is his guilt over having to live a lie.
